Hello hello hello and welcome to episode number 96 of The Wellness 4 Women Show! Today, I want to talk about the potential hidden obstacles to your ‘weight loss’ that you might not even know are happening.
If you want to get all sciency it's called 'psychological resistance'.
You might be wondering, what exactly does this mean?
Well, we're about to uncover how certain beliefs could be creating resistance and holding you back from achieving your goals.
Resistance is the internal force that opposes change.
It’s the voice in your head that says, “This is too hard,” or “I can’t do this.” Whoa slow down Nelly things are getting hairy,
It’s natural to feel resistance when embarking on a new path, especially one as significant as transforming your health and well-being but it can also come up at any time, any place anywhere and the question is are you recognising it? Are you aware of it and are you stepping into action?
If not then don’t be surprised at why you keep finding yourself in a pickle with your plan, overeating, and generally not showing up in the way you want to.
It is critical to tackle it and tackle it well else it will keep coming back.
Consider resistance to be like a persistent weed in your garden. You can take of the top and you can’t see it for a while but it grows back. Tackle the root you get rid of the weed for good.
This is what we can do with Belief Coding®️ we can get in and tackle the root of the problem, the belief that is causing you to self-sabotage, the belief that stops you from building habits, gathering momentum etc.
We can tackle this too in the membership. Want to shift your beliefs, you need to gather awareness, step into action and be accountable.
Let’s have a closer look at how resistance could be showing up for you?
One of the most significant areas of resistance that can hinder your ‘weight loss’ and well-being journey is safety.
At first glance, this might seem counterintuitive. How can it be unsafe to do something you think will do you good?
But when you dig deeper, you can uncover just how deeply ingrained our need for safety is and how it can create powerful resistance to change.
Our brain remember has one job… keep us safe!
Keep the status quo.
It is why weight loss and working on our well-being can feel hard. It’s why we can feel like we have conflicting priorities.
Think about it, you’ve likely been following the same eating habits for years. These habits, even if ‘unhealthy’ or not serving you , are familiar and predictable. The thought of changing them can introduce uncertainty, which to your subconscious brain can feel unsafe. Not in the… there is a murderer chasing you, unsafe type way but in the… your brain doesn’t like it safe. This fear of the unknown can be a significant barrier, as our brains are wired to prefer the familiar hell over the uncertain heaven.
Think about any comfort eating you do. Maybe you find work stressful and head for snacks. This routine provides emotional comfort and a sense of safety. Changing this routine can feel like losing a safety net, making it hard to embrace new, healthier habits.
Maybe you want to start a new fitness program. You might worry, “What if I can’t stick to this?”, “What if I don’t see results?” Or “What if I get injured”. These fears can make the prospect of trying something new feel unsafe, leading to resistance.
Safety can also come up in relation to other people.
Maybe you are a social butterfly and have a roaring social life. Your friends and family are used to you eating and living a certain way, consciously or unconsciously you may worry that changing these habits can feel like risking social isolation or judgment. This need for social acceptance and emotional safety can create significant resistance to change. It goes back to cave people days when we needed to be part of a tribe.
There is so much resistance that can come up and we have only touched a little here on safety.
There are other types of resistance we can have. With my Belief Coding®️ clients and members U talk about the work of Byron Katie.
Let’s turn our sites to another common example when working on weight loss. Deprivation. The old FOMO.
What happens if you decide to cut out your favourite food in the interest of lose weight?
Initially, it feels empowering, but soon you start to feel deprived. You miss the joy of indulging in your favourite foods, leading to a cravings, binge eating it or quitting the dietary changes altogether.
The cycle of deprivation and overindulgence..the typical diet cycle, creates an unhealthy relationship with food, making sustainable ‘weight loss’ challenging.
This is why I advocate food freedom. If you stop looking at foods as good or bad, stop putting certain foods on pedestals this all helps. Want to really explore something cool do it with Belief Coding®️ OMG I have discovered so much about y relationship with food using the methods that we learn as part of the training it is absolutely fascinating.
Imagine being able to go back to where an association with a certain food started and changing it so it no longer was your kryptonite! This is what I have worked with clients on and seen others do the same in the community.`
What if you could neutralise your relationship with sugar or chocolate would that change your life?
The final one I want to cover today is possibility. Do you actually believe you can lose weight?
Maybe you have been told ‘losing weight’ will be difficult for you due to PCOS, that you heard it was harder over 40, or maybe you have developed the belief after a number of ‘weight loss’ attempts.
Maybe you’ve internalised the beliefs somewhere that you don’t deserve to be healthy and happy. Or maybe someone has told you this before and so you are not giving yourself true permission to succeed, you’re unlikely to take the necessary steps towards your goals.
These beliefs are what are creating your current reality. They are the guiding lights to your thoughts, feelings, actions and then results.
They are creating resistance and it needs to go and fast.
I want you to take a moment and reflect on your beliefs in light of what I have said today.
Where do you feel stuck, despite your best efforts?
What beliefs and old stories are you carrying around that are holding you back from achieving your goals?
Remember that weed in the garden, get right on in there, dig deep and junk it out so it can’t come back.
